What you need to succeed.

For those of you who do not know me well, you would not have a clue why I am suggesting you watch this TED Talk. Perhaps you have not yet been introduced to the "world of TED" but I am about to show you something worth having.

I think it would serve you well to watch this talk about GRIT.

You see, yesterday a young woman asked me this question.

Why do we have to do all this school work and write exams?

I have been asked this question many, times and in different ways , even by my very own kids.
The rub here is that learning all that you have to at school is called EDUCATION. It is what a blessing to receive one and there are many who do not. Most of what you learn becomes part of you in the form of character

You rise up out of schooling with attitudes, habits , ideas and thinking that are who you are. You learn to agree or disagree. You descover what you like and do not. You get to test your ideas in a safe place. Some of what you learn you might forget but your brain has changed and grown and formed in the process and THIS is what you need in life. So, DO not give up!!

Watch this!!

What is important ?

Begripstoets

This is often where pupils fall down.

Tips
1, read the passage through once and try get the big picture.
2. read it again and underline tricky words
3. NOW tackle the questions one by one.
4. The answers are often simply in the text BUT you must use STOMPI if you can not get the order of words right.

Do not answer in one word answers UNLESS they say so.

Give reasons for your answers where they ask- gee n rede vir your antwoord.

WOORDORDER

I can not say enough that you must use STOMPI to help you get your word orde correct.

Use it in writing all your own work from scratch.

Create short sentences.

Use words you know and add variety by choosing describing words ( byvoeglike naamwoorde)

Your subject should come first and then always a verb 1. Please do NOT put the next verb after the first one. It is wrong.
I see this so much!

If you start with time then the verb comes next and the subject afterwards.

Tv1 S MPI
etc

Go for it!!

REMEMBER that Trappe van Vergelyking ( comparing) are also Byvoeglike Naamwoorde.(describing)

*

So, how do you know when to add a describbing adjective or a comapring adjective?

Read the sentence carefully.
If there is an "as" after the adjective OR a "die" infront of it - it is probably a comparitive adjective.

Here, two or more things are being compared.

see page 216 and 217 for examples and practice.

To write a summary of a short story means that you are required to write a short few sentences on the story. They could ask you to write 6 sentences as an example.

How are you going to do this??

Read the story through once.
Then, underline all the words you do not know or can not figure out from the context.

Work with what you know!!

Take the key BIG ideas and use those.

USE STOMPI

I can not say this enough to children and teens in primary school and high school. You are getting your word order all muddled up because you do not use STOMPI. Please !!It will help you enormously.

As you go into high school, use  STOMPI.

Use these ideas below to formulate your opsomming.

Who - Wie -
When- Wanneer
Why? - Hoekom
Where - Waar
What -Wat
Time and place - Plek
People involved - Die hoof Karakters

Go for it. Practice. You can do it.
